Logan Review

Going into Logan, I had very high expectations, like this was Force Awakens levels of hype that I had for this film. And this isn’t just because I am a massive fan of Wolverine and X- Men, it is because I liked what James Mangold, the director did with the source material. Instead of just hashing yet another average superhero film; Logan has a special tone to it. It is clearly inspired by the classic western film Shane which even makes an appearance in the film.

The point being that Logan has been made with a very sombre and gritty tone with short sequences of action which serves to be a critical element of just how good it is. And it’s because of it that I would personally consider “The Dark Knight” of the Marvel based films, as it has a very similar formula, and leaves the same impact if not bigger.

This is also the first X-Men film to be rated R. It’s bloody, brutal and at points will make you squirm in your seat. Without spoiling it, there is a great scene where the claws and the gore are fully shown, and when I watched that I remember myself laughing with joy at it because of how brutal it is. It’s gorgeous…..

And whilst on the topic of that, let’s just mention that Hugh Jackman once again kills it as Wolverine, and gives a great final performance in his role, and may be in my opinion the best on-screen Portrayal of the character out of Jackman’s seventeen year run as Wolverine. And it genuinely makes me sad that we may never see Jackman take on that role again.

And it’s not only Logan, both Charles Xavier and Laura are extremely well made characters and it makes for the journey they go onto to be a rollercoaster, whilst also being filled with extreme drama and heart felt moments. But it’s the build-up and the new equilibrium which is very impactful and left me with a sense of closure, but also kept that element of curiosity, wanting me to know what happens after the credits role.

And speaking of which, there is not an end credit scene in Logan. To the surprise of many people when the screen cut to black, a lot of them left disappointed with the fact they didn’t get to see more. But I’ll be one to defined that decision, as this was a refreshing take on the modern day superhero film and isn’t really connected to any other universe that we see in almost every other Marvel or DC based film. And what makes this so good is that Logan can just be a good film on its own without referencing or crossing over into other story lines, which is what makes it so unique and special.

Overall I really did enjoy my time with Logan and I left the cinema with my expectations exceeded, it is truly a masterpiece of a superhero film, and now is one of my favourites of all time, and is definitely one film you cannot miss out on this year

FINAL VERDICT - 8/10
